Sense of BALANCE
In design, balance is often about the technical things: scale, proportion, color, and the visual weight of a room. But it is also about a feeling. A balanced home gives your eye a place to rest—and gives you a place to rest, too.
How Does Home Feel?
Take a quick inventory. Right now, does your home feel:
☐ Grounded
☐ Chaotic
☐ A little flat
☐ Almost there, but missing something
Do you want it to:
☐ Comfort you when you are tired
☐ Inspire you when you are stuck
☐ Welcome people in with warmth
☐ Do all of the above
Consider: Where in your home do you feel most at peace?
Furniture That Holds You
Furniture is a major investment, so it should do more than photograph well. It needs to fit the room, support the way you live, and be genuinely comfortable.
A few upholstered favorites I return to:
PINCH makes beautiful, understated upholstery. The Moreau armchairs were just right for a residential project in San Antonio.
Sixpenny is a great source for a more casual, relaxed feel—especially in a lower level or family room. I used the Neva Round Swivel Chair in a clubhouse lounge, and it was a great fit.
Dmitriy & Co is a favorite when a room calls for something more tailored. Two Bellows Sofas became the foundation of a formal living room that turned out beautifully.
Consider: What piece of furniture in your home makes you feel most settled?
A Place to Reset
Balance is also about making room for the things that help you feel like yourself. It could be a cozy reading chair, a writing nook, a dedicated space to move, a greenhouse, an herbal pantry, or a room for listening to music.
Not every home needs an orangery, a meditation room, or an infrared sauna and cold plunge—but it is worth asking: what would make your home support you a little better?
A place to create. To recover. To rest. To move. To listen. To be still.
Consider: What would bring more balance to your home?
